CKMS-FM at Winterloo

Radio Waterloo had a booth at Winterloo this past Saturday, 17 February 2024. We were supposed to broadcast live from 11:00am to 5:00am, but it was cold! How cold was it? It was so cold that the computer we use to link to the studio froze up! Our wonderful Technical Committee managed to find another computer, which we put inside the DJ Dome so it wouldn’t freeze up too. But that meant we couldn’t use our microphones to chat with the people at Winterloo. Happily, DJ King Kadeem did an excellent job as a radio host, so our Live To Air broadcast was a success!

CKMS-FM 102.7 Radio Waterloo attending Winterloo, 17th of February: 12:00-5:00 PM ~Come on out!

We are attending Winterloo! This is the second time, as we were there in 2019 as well (super chilly that year). Come out say hello! Winterloo has stuff for the whole family.

*New location. Due to mild weather many of the wintery activities are cancelled. Thereof, Winterloo Lite will take place in Waterloo Public Square. Come find us!

Radio Waterloo joins the #Fediverse!

Due to technical difficulties, the #Fediverse integration on this website is currently deactivated.

(five coloured dots, fully meshed with coloured lines)Hello Fediverse!

Radio Waterloo, CKMS-FM 102.7, a community radio station in Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada is very happy to be joining the #Fediverse through our blog at https://radiowaterloo.ca/.

Our show hosts post their music lists, interview show notes, and sometimes podcasts on the Radio Waterloo blog, and now those posts are available in the Fediverse too!

Follow @radiowaterloo.ca@radiowaterloo.ca to receive all the posts, or follow individual show hosts from our Authors List at https://radiowaterloo.ca/authors.

Happy listening!

The #Fediverse: A New Social Messaging Platform for Programmers

Due to technical difficulties, the #Fediverse integration on this website is currently deactivated.

Hi Programmers! As you may have read in the news, Canada’s (illustration of two hands holding a mobile phone, one finger scrolling the screen)Online News Act was made into law this summer. In short, it requires online platforms to pay news organizations for displaying links to their news stories. The law and its regulations are worded so that it only applies to Google and Meta (Facebook and Instagram). Paying to display links was never in Google’s and Meta’s business model, so in compliance with the law Facebook and Instagram have stopped displaying links to news stories, and are no longer displaying the pages and accounts of news organizations, including those of Radio Waterloo. We’ve lost all the engagement with our community on Facebook and Instagram. We can still make posts and do live videos, but nobody in Canada can see them  1 .

On the bright side, Radio Waterloo is a big enough news organization to be recognized by Facebook and Instagram!

Likewise, Google will be removing any links to news organizations from their search and news products, probably happening when the Online News Act comes into force in December.

For entirely different reasons, Radio Waterloo is no longer getting any engagement on Twitter either. Twitter (now calling itself “X‑Corp”) has restricted tweets to logged-in users only, so they’re no longer publicly visible. The Twitter analytics show @RadioWaterloo is getting only a handful of views per month, compared to hundreds before the summer. And lately, the conversations on Twitter have become toxic, and are no longer compatible with our Statement of Principles.

Radio Waterloo will continue to explore ways to for us to navigate the dominant social media sites, but in the meantime…

The Fediverse to the rescue!

So, what can we do? We can find ourselves a social media platform that doesn’t depend on large corporations only looking out for their bottom line. And that’s (five coloured dots, fully meshed with coloured lines)The Fediverse!

The Fediverse started as a single social media site in the summer of 2008, “StatusNet”, created by Canadian entrepreneur Evan Prodromou. The StatusNet software was installed by hundreds of individuals and networked together to be come one Federated Universe. Today there is specialized Fediverse software that works like Twitter (Mastodon or Pleroma), Facebook (Friendica), Instagram (Pixelfed), and many more, and each has hundreds of instances (servers). And because they’re federated, they all communicate with each other, so you can see Friendica posts on Mastodon, Mastodon “toots” on Pixelfed, and Pixelfed images on Friendica.

This Radio Waterloo blog is joining the Fediverse!

Starting today, any posts you make on the Radio Waterloo blog can be seen in the Fediverse. If you already have an account in the Fediverse, follow @radiowaterloo.ca@radiowaterloo.ca (yes, that’s two “@”s, two “radiowaterloo”s, and two “.ca”s).

People can also follow individual authors on the blog with @username@radiowaterloo.ca — check out our Authors Page for your Fediverse handle. Everyone who’s posted their music list, show notes, or podcast audio file is there. If you don’t like your “Bio” paragraph or your show logo, then log into the Radio Waterloo blog and change it! You can’t change your Fediverse handle yet, but that’s coming.

All posts on https://radiowaterloo.ca/ will go to your subscribers in the Fediverse, and any replies they make will show up in the comments on the post. But people can’t contact you directly from the Fediverse unless they reply — direct messages don’t work (yet). For full two-way communication you’ll need an account in the Fediverse. Here are some places where you can sign up for an account:

If you use: Then you want: Join this instance:

Instagram Pixelfed https://pixelfed.org/how-to-join
Twitter Mastodon https://mstdn.ca/ or

And if none of these match your tastes, there are other instance locators at https://fediverse.observer/ and https://joinfediverse.wiki/.

If you have any questions or need help posting on the Radio Waterloo blog, please join our weekly training session, online every Sunday at 8:30pm at https://radiowaterloo.ca/progcom.

Footnote 1: Sometimes people can see the content on Instagram, sometimes they can’t. Some days I receive messages from Instagram that “Nobody in Canada can see your content”, some days I don’t. People have told me their “@ckms102.7fm” mentions aren’t links. And, of course, engagement has dropped to close to zero…

Nominations for the 2021 Golden MP3 Awards

The Golden MP3 Awards have been awarded! Check 2021 Golden MP3 Award Recipients for details!

2021 was a tough year for CKMS-FM programmers. The studio was closed for most of the year, but our programmers soldiered on, producing some excellent community radio programs in the process.

The Golden MP3 Awards are the opportunity to recognize exceptional show hosts, producers, their programs, and the people who work behind the scenes. The awards ceremony will be held at the CKMS-FM Volunteer Appreciation Picnic, Noon-6:30pm on Saturday, 4 June 2022 at the picnic shelter in Waterloo Park.

Sorry, Golden MP3 nominations are now closed

You can nominate a show for more than one award, and nominate more than one show for an award, or skip an award altogether. If you complete this nomination form but find you forgot to nominate a show, you can fill in another nomination form. Nominations close at 11:59pm Thursday, 2 June 2022 (Election Day!)

Descriptions of the shows are at https://radiowaterloo.ca/about-our-shows/

There are still a few restrictions in effect — there will be no in-studio guests, but phone and web conference interviews can be held with studio equipment.

DJs and show hosts can check details for studio re-opening to see what they need to do before returning (login required for that link).

Welcome back, everyone!

RFQ: CKMS-FM Studio Ventilation (283 Duke St. W. 114b, Kitchener, Ontario)

To: HVAC contractors

Request For Quote (RFQ20210719.v)

Our Kitchener studio is a unit in the former Boehmer Box Factory, unit 114B on the first floor off Breithaupt Street. The unit is approximately 400 square feet, divided into a reception area and studio control room, both approximately 15ft x 15ft. Both areas require ventilation and filtration for Covid-19 mitigation. The unit does not have any outside walls. The corridor from the studio to the outside door is approximately 50 ft. and there is a bulkhead over the outside door suitable for an air inlet. We have the cooperation and support of building management for this installation.

We would like a quote on the provision and installation of appropriate ventilation and filtration for both studio areas (reception and control room). We would like to receive two quotes, one for ventilation and filtration from the corridor, and one for ventilation and filtration with ductwork to supply outside air for ventilation.

Quotes should include an itemized list of the main components to be installed, labour costs, and taxes. Note that the lowest quote or any particular quote will not necessarily be the successful respondent.

If you need to evaluate the site there will be CKMS staff onsite on Monday, 26 July between 10am and 3pm. Please make an appointment with Bob Jonkman at bob@radiowaterloo.ca or 519-884-2567 menu option 6.

Please submit your response by by e-mail to bob@radiowaterloo.ca by 6pm on Wednesday, 28 July 2021. Responses will be evaluated and all respondents will be contacted on Friday, 30 July 2021. A purchase order will be sent to the successful respondent.
