Support Permanent Funding for CKMS!

Dear CKMS listener,

The federal government is currently working on the budget for April 1, 2023 to March 30, 2024. The Community Radio Fund of Canada alongside the three main community radio associations (The Association des radiodiffuseurs communautaires du Québec (“ARCQ”), l’Alliance des radios communautaires du Canada (“ARCC”), and the National Campus and Community Radio Association/Association nationale des radios étudiantes et communautaires (“NCRA/ANREC”)) are currently doing a lot of work, demonstrating the impacts of the community radio sector and how regular financial support of the sector will have enormous impacts.  We are at a critical time in the outreach efforts where your participation as a listener is incredibly important.

At this time, we are focusing on two areas of importance that will bring direct funding to CKMS alongside Campus/Community radio stations across Canada:

1) The extension and expansion of the Local Journalism Initiative (we currently have 41 stations with paid journalists on the ground), as the 5-year program is about to enter its final year without a plan after 2024 to renew the program. We are looking for that program to expand to $20 million a year and make it permanent.

2) Establish a 25 million dollar annual Community Broadcasting Fund to be distributed among all stations. This fund would support all licensed broadcasters, with core and stable funding.

Our goal is to now have as many listeners of community radio stations as possible contact their local Member of Parliament (MP) so that they are aware of the sector and this pitch for support so that we have a better chance of having this included in the next federal budget.

Attached is a letter template which we ask that you copy, add your name to, and send to our local MPs in Kitchener-Waterloo.

We thank you for your support!

Funding Drive 2022

Donate!

August 2022 – As CKMS enters its 45th year on the FM airwaves, Radio Waterloo is pleased to announce the Friends Of CKMS Funding Drive (August 14th to 27th both inclusive). The drive aims to raise a minimum of $10,270 to support the ongoing operations of our non-profit, volunteer-run, community radio station.

We are counting on your support!

Background

Radio Waterloo evolved from the Broadcasting Club at the University of Waterloo which was operating in the early to mid 1960’s. CRTC-licensed since 1977, CKMS is 45 years on the FM airwaves!

The radio station is entirely run by volunteers and does not receive any ongoing funding from the government or universities. The majority of our operations are funded by the on-air hosts and donations from the community. The station provides a unique service to the KW region by being a voice on radio for the different cultural communities and alternate content not available on commercial radio.

Radio is a resource. With most people having access to a radio, the FM broadcast is a powerful tool to connect listeners with programs. CKMS wants to enable content creators in KW to be heard on FM. We provide training and facilities for anyone to operate their own show and the freedom to choose their own content (within CRTC regulations).

CKMS is a leader in Canadian radio. We were one of the quickest stations to adapt to the lock down, enabling shows to get back on air from home studios streaming to our transmitter via the internet. And due to our cooperative funding model, our broadcast maximizes content by not depending on advertising. We also broadcast online and can do video streaming from our studio.

Why should you give?

By giving to CKMS, you ensure a solid platform on which our community can stand. You put radio in the hands of people, so that the innovative ideas and rich experiences of Kitchener-Waterloo can be expressed. You enable the alternative to a platform that is dominated by the same old songs.

Be sure to mention your favorite show when you pledge!

Together With Ukraine – A Drum and Bass Compilation

Pressure Drop presents,
Thursday, March 3rd, 2022
8 to 10 PM EST
A 2-hour special in support of, “Together with Ukraine”, a Drum and Bass Compilation with tracks donated from some of the top producers worldwide.
All funds raised through sale of this compilation will be donated to Ukrainian Red Cross Society.

With every day that passes, the high-scale humanitarian crisis and assault on the people of Ukraine continues to worsen. Civilian deaths are increasing on a daily basis across the country with no sign of stopping, with millions of citizens already forced out of their homes in search of refuge. As we wake up to yet another day of war, hundreds more innocent lives have been lost and destroyed overnight. We cannot leave this unchecked, and we need to act on this now without hesitation.

Now more than ever is a time for unity, solidarity and support of a nation under attack. It’s crucial for us to use our voice to create widespread and sustained awareness of the situation on the ground in Ukraine, and to give support in every way possible. Whether it’s signing petitions, attending demonstrations, sharing facts on social media, offering help for refugees, or more – this situation cannot be allowed to continue, and engaging in support of any kind for the people of Ukraine is our absolute priority.

Comprised of over 100 exclusive tracks from across the Drum & Bass and wider Bass Music spectrum, alongside over 30 pieces of bespoke visual art, with art direction by Uno (@uno.graphics), we are proud to present our compilation project ‘Together with Ukraine’.

We are incredibly grateful to the music community for supporting our initiative to raise vital funds for humanitarian aid on the front line. All artists and people involved have offered their services free of charge, and all revenue generated will be donated directly to the Ukrainian Red Cross Society. We have set a minimum price of £12 for the compilation, but we would encourage everyone to give generously and donate a higher amount if you have the means to do so.

We would like to thank everybody who has taken part in making this project a reality – including our extended team of Diana and Bohdan (Ukraine), Jan (Germany) and Piotr (Poland) – as well as everybody that is willing to purchase the album.

For more information on the Ukrainian Red Cross Society, and the humanitarian efforts they are undertaking to heal the devastating impacts of the war in Ukraine, please visit their website at redcross.org.ua/en.

Scenes from Carried Away on the Crest of a Wave – Livestreamed by UofW Theatre, 25-27 March 2021

UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO THEATRE AND PERFORMANCE PROGRAM PRESENTS

scenes from carried away on the crest of a wave

Written by David Yee

Directed by Andy Houston

Associate Director: Mira J. Henderson

carried away on the crest of a wave is a series of stories that follow the impacts of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami as they resonate, intersect globally, and move us with the power of water and the beauty of human resilience. The deadliest tsunami in recorded history, the waves killed over 250,000 people from forty-six countries as they struck the coasts of fourteen nations spanning two continents. In the aftermath, we find a wide range of humanity: a conflicted priest, sisters of legend, an orphaned boy, a radio shock jock, an awed scientist, and a man who makes miraculous discoveries in the aftermath of the disaster.

Written by David Yee, the audience bears witness to the experiences of people from around the world who have been changed in their minds and souls by this event. These stories represent glimpses of the human spirit, facing enormous adversity yet driven by a will to come together for reflection and sharing — a desire that our own pandemic-impacted world knows all too well. The staging of scenes from carried away on the crest of a wave will reveal the effects of a global natural disaster through a surreal lens. In the ebb and flow of trauma, the unconscious and perceptual space of dreams will exist alongside and within our experience and understanding of reality.

Director Andy Houston collaborates with Denyse Karn (set and props), Howard J. Davis (projections), Deanna Choi (sound), and Paul de Jong (vocal coach), as well as resident designers Nadine Grant (costume) and Nicole Reid (lighting). Together, they weave together a dream-like world of found objects, images and people amidst an environment as fluid as floodwaters from a tsunami.

As the program’s first ever livestreamed production, carried away on the crest of a wave aims to connect our communities in times of uncertainty through the medium of live theatrical performance. There will be a digital dramaturgy Hub and Engagement Space hosted on the website for the performance, which can be found at uwcarriedaway.com. This space aims to provide context to our audience’s experience of the play and production, from research sources and themes of the work to the creative vision of the artistic team. Don’t miss this important aspect of scenes from carried away on the crest of a wave.

#FridaysforFuture School Strike for Climate

On February 1, 2019, young people will sit out of classes across Waterloo Region and again take to the streets to demand that our leaders face responsibility for our warming planet. The Fridays for Future School Strike for Climate will take place at Waterloo City Hall from 12:30pm to 1:30pm on Friday, 1 February 2019, and on the first Friday of every month. Supporters of all ages welcome.

Organizing behind Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, 16, climate strikers will ask cities and councils across Waterloo Region, as well as the federal and provincial governments, to declare a climate emergency.

Thunberg blasts our collective inaction on climate change: “Some people say that we are not doing enough to fight climate change. But that is not true. Because to ‘not do enough’ you have to do something. And the truth is we are basically not doing anything.”

Greta’s not alone. Another youth activist, Jamie Margolin of Zero Hour, has begun her own campaign to rouse global leaders into concrete measures to stabilize our shared climate. Recently, Margolin compared climate change to “a time bomb about to go off and everyone [is] ignoring it.”

We know that our futures will be disrupted by climate, and feel that we have no voice. So we are making ourselves visible across the world. Thirty-five thousand students in Brussels went on strike from school this past week alone, joining school strikers across Europe and heatwave-stricken Australia.

Like our peers across the world, students in Waterloo Region are frightened of an uncertain future dramatically altered by climate impacts and planetary instability. We don’t see the point in attending school for an education for a future that has been neglected by Canada’s government and by decision-makers world-wide.

We strike because we are ignored. We strike because our elders are sacrificing us for short-term profits. We see, as Greta does, that our leaders “need to put their economic goals aside to safeguard the living conditions of humankind in the future.”

Given that the world has until 2030 to cut emissions in half in order to secure a safe climate future, cities across the UK have declared climate emergencies, intending to fully decarbonize their economies. Canada’s precedent for declaring a climate emergency has just recently been set by Vancouver, and Christine Boyle, Vancouver city councillor, told journalists: “I was really inspired to see the students…that they are acting similarly to students around the globe to get older elected leaders in office to listen to them.”

If our leaders truly listened to the science on climate change, as we young people do, they would not build further fossil fuel infrastructure, would end all fossil fuel and animal agriculture subsidies, and invest heavily in a zero-carbon energy future.

We need our elected officials and other citizens to speak out with us for our futures. Today. We need all levels of government to declare a state of climate emergency, and we need every decision they make to be made as if our future depends on it. Because it does.

Back To School: Bus Program & FREE Teacher Memberships

THEMUSEUM Announces New Partnership & Teacher Appreciation Day

Kitchener, Ontario –

As we prepare to head into a new school year, THEMUSEUM continues its commitment to lifelong learning with educational exhibitions, interactive technology installations and hands-on opportunities.

Through The School Bus Program, generously supported by the Gore Mutual Insurance Company, transportation is provided to students who would otherwise not be able to afford a field trip.

“We’ve repeatedly heard from a number of educators in Waterloo Region that the barrier for students to attend field trips is the cost of buses,” said Paige Phillips, the Director of Development & Membership at THEMUSEUM. “The support from Gore Mutual Insurance has eliminated that financial strain, making THEMUSEUM more accessible to students so they may enjoy a learning experience outside of the classroom.”

In addition, THEMUSEUM is now able to offer Teacher Memberships at no cost to educators. The Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan now sponsors Teacher Memberships, which provides teachers with free access to THEMUSEUM and ample opportunity to further develop or incorporate education programs and exhibitions into their lesson plans.

In recognition of just how important educators are in this community, THEMUSEUM is holding one last “hurrah” before the school year begins. Teacher members with their OCT card will receive free admission and a free membership on Thursday, August 23 from 9:00am-4:00pm. They are welcome to bring up to three family members.

BRAIN: The World Inside Your Head at THEMUSEUM

Traveling Exhibition Focuses on Function, Physiology and Future

Kitchener, Ontario –

Why do you (we, they) think what you (we, they) think? All your mindful musings – soon answered!

Using innovative special effects, video games, optical illusions and interactive displays, BRAIN shows how the brain functions – and sometimes – malfunctions. This hands‑on exhibition provides an up‑close look at the human body’s most essential and fascinating organ by exploring its development, geography and function. A shimmering tunnel of flashing fiber-optics illuminates networks of neurons firing and communicating, as visitors delve deeper into the brain to discover its basic workings. From infancy through old age, learn the evolution of scientists’ understanding of the brain’s physiology and study the re-created skull of Phineas Gage — a man who survived after his brain was pierced by a metal rod.

“We’re psyched to announce today, on the heels of World Brain Day, the opportunity to bring such an informative, engaging and interactive exhibition to Waterloo Region,” said David Marskell, CEO, THEMUSEUM. “Knowledge is power – and this 3,000-square-foot grey matter exploration will be sure to expand your mind!”

The exhibition makes brain-related disorders, such as Alzheimer’s, depression and addiction, easier to understand. Guests will explore the relationship between depression and creativity, how drugs work in the brain, and the nature of pain as well as the future of brain treatments, genome mapping and molecular medicine. It will run from September 29, 2018 – April 28, 2019 and is made possible by Pfizer Inc. and produced by Evergreen Exhibitions in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health. The exhibition is generously sponsored by The Ontario Brain Institute. A series of related events, including THEMUSEUM’s Dialogue Series, will be announced shortly.
